Grilled Cheese

The Contestant#16

Before you dive into this installment, have you read First Kiss ?

“Alright, before I wash this pan, does anyone else want a grilled cheese sandwich?” Adriana heard Corey shout through the house.

Slipping out of her heels, she made her way down the hall.

“I do.” She said, popping her head into the kitchen.

Corey, along with ten or so other contestants, all turned to look at her.

“Hey, you’re home!” Edwin cheered.

Making her way further into the kitchen, Adriana greeted the contestants as she made her way over to Corey.

“What do you want on your sandwich? We’ve got bacon, like twenty different types of cheeses, and four different types of breads to choose from.” Corey said.

Adriana looked down at the counter where there was a collection of breads and cheeses.

“Did you make all these breads?” She asked, turning back to look at Corey.

“Yeah, they made like fucking forty loaves. Who knew a raisin bread grilled cheese sandwich could be so good.” Sam, a lawyer from Ohio said, just before taking another bite of her sandwich.

“I definitely want bacon on mine, and….” Adriana trailed off as she looked down at the counter.

About a million different  cheeses, breads, and options for side dishes lined the counter, just looking at it all had her feeling slightly overwhelmed.

“I trust that as a chef you’ll do me right.” Adriana said, causing Brock to snicker.

Adriana turned to look at the man, who was now redder than a fire truck.

“Don’t mind him, he’s pretty drunk.” Corey said, waving a dismissive hand.

“Alright, I’m gonna go get changed and then I’ll be right back.” Adriana said, squeezing Corey’s bicep.

Corey gave a nod and Adriana headed off to her room.

As she arrived on the second floor, Adriana heard  Ali, and someone else, talking in the hall.

“No way, you did not hit that in the women’s restroom.” Someone said.

“Bro, I’m telling you, I did. As a matter of fact, I even got a video.” Ali said.

Adriana peeked around the corner just in time to see Ali, Nelson, Jedd, a car salesman from Canada, and two other men crowd around Ali. The men stared down at the phone as Ali hit play on the video, and a moment later the sound of skin slapping together, accompanied by moans, filled the hall.

“Goddamn, she got those porn star titties.” Jedd said as he stared down at the phone.

“Shit, she might as well be. I was talking to a couple of the waiters and she and some of the other girls pay the guys to appear on their Onlyfans accounts.” Ali said.

“Hold up, did she tell you when she’s releasing this?” Nelson said, pointing down at the phone.

Ali looked at Nelson as if he’d grown a second head.

“The fuck are you talking about? This is the only copy of this video. I’m not gonna let some bitch put a video, with my fucking face in it, on the fucking internet.” Ali said with a scoff.

Adriana shook her head, she knew something was up when she spent the majority of the night without him; but honestly, it didn’t matter.

She knew the second she signed on to do this competition that there would be a few among the bunch who weren’t truly there for her.

But the idea of Ali going around, showing that video off to people, didn’t sit right with her; she’d have to do something about that.

Adriana stepped back out into the hall, and luckily, this time, it was empty. Making her way back downstairs, she arrived in the kitchen just as Corey was plating her sandwich.

“Perfect timing.” Corey said, sliding her sandwich onto a plate.

“You want some soup too, or just the sandwich?” Corey asked, pointing to the pot on the stove.

“Oh hell yeah, I want the soup.” Adriana said.

Now that she was back in the kitchen, it was just now starting to hit her just how hungry she truly was. And so, as she sat down on the stool beside Alex, Corey placed the sandwich and a bowl of soup in front of her.

The second Corey set the food in front of her, Adriana could already feel herself beginning to salivate; she hadn’t smelt food this good since she last made it over to Italy to visit her mother’s side of the family.

As she geared up to take the first bite, she watched as all the other contestants practically hovered over her, waiting with baited breaths for her reaction.

“People, this isn’t fucking chopped, give the woman some space.” Corey laughed as they leaned against the counter across from where Adriana sat.

The contestants surrounding Adriana took a couple steps back, but their gazes remained at the same level of intensity; like her opinion on this sandwich could make or break Corey’s entire career.

“Why am I sweating?” Adriana laughed as she picked up the sandwich.

The room fell silent as she brought the sandwich up to her face and prepared to take her first bite.

The sandwich was a delicious contradiction; everything from the presentation to the multiple layers of flavors all screamed high end restaurant. But the warmth of the freshly baked bread, the gooey cheese, and the spices, that reminded Adriana of her nonna, took Adriana back to simpler days. Days when she would wake up early and watch Saturday morning cartoons, days when she was too small to see over the dashboard, and too young to know of the many horrors of the world.

As she set the sandwich back down on the plate, Edwin stared intensely at her.

It was absurd but also a little cute how much everyone wanted her to like Corey’s sandwich.

Adriana finished chewing and washed the last of the sandwich down with more of the tomato soup.

“Holy fuck, that’s good.” She said as she licked her lips.

The entire kitchen erupted into cheers; there was no doubt that many of the contestants were drunk as fuck.

“You did it Core.” Edwin said, giving Corey a congratulatory pat on the back.

Corey shook their head, causing Adriana to chuckle.

“Alright, everyone out, I’ve gotta clean this shit up.” Corey said.

Since most of the contestants were pretty shitfaced, the few sober ones left helped them all upstairs, leaving Corey and Adriana alone in the kitchen.
