Clyde and Jess

The rain fell against the window like an impatient teen who’d forgotten their house key.

“Jesus, it’s really coming down out there.” Said Clyde.

Lifting his head just enough, Clyde peaked over his wife’s shoulder and out the bedroom window. Just then, lightning skipped across the sky, shining as bright as the sun before fading away again.

“You think we’ll lose power?” Clyde’s wife, Jess, asked worriedly as she stared out the window.

Clyde flopped down onto his pillow and pressed a kiss into his wife’s back.

“Hope not.” He mumbled into her skin.

His top surgery was just a few hours away, and Clyde had been waiting for what felt like a lifetime for this day. He would hate to have to push the operation back because of the storm.

“Have you been up this whole time?” Jess asked.

Turning away from the window, Jess laid back down and rolled over.

Clyde slipped an arm around his wife, hugging her close as she rested her head on his shoulder.

Thunder crackled in the distance and more light filled the sky, causing the room to briefly light up before falling dark again.

“Can’t sleep, my mind just keeps racing. This all feels like a dream.” He said as he traced senseless patterns into his wife’s forearm.

The room fell silent, and for a moment Clyde thought that his wife had fallen back asleep. But when a sharp pain dug into his flesh, Clyde hissed as he looked down at her.

“What the hell Jess?!” He shouted, his hand rising to soothe his shoulder.

Jessica chuckled as she hugged her husband closer.

“What, I just wanted to remind you that you’re not dreaming, this is real!” She said sheepishly.

Clyde rolled over and turned on the lamp sitting on Jess’s side of the bed.

Jess smiled a soft, sheepish smile, one that said; ‘don’t be mad’.

Rolling his eyes, Clyde turned back to the lamp and cut off the light before lying back down and turning back to face his wife.

“Seriously, I didn’t mean to bite you that hard.” She said as she ran a soothing hand over his shoulder.

Clyde pulled his wife back into his arms.

“Oh I’m fine with the biting, I just wish that it was leading somewhere.” He said with a chuckle.

“Perve.” She laughed, slapping his chest.

Clyde let out a laugh before pulling his wife closer. Despite the darkness, Clyde had no trouble locating his wife’s mouth. Taking his time, Clyde kissed Jess slowly and easily. Her lips were softer than the finest cotton and smoother than the finest silk. She still tasted like Crest toothpaste, and Clyde felt like he could spend a lifetime kissing her, and yet it still wouldn’t be enough.

“We have to go to sleep, you have surgery in the morning.” She said between kisses.

“No, it’s fine, I’ll sleep on the operating table.” He joked before stealing another kiss.

Jess let out a laugh as she pushed her husband away.

“Well, some of us have to make a thirty-minute drive to the hospital tomorrow.” She said.

Clyde huffed, and though she couldn’t see his face, Jess just knew he was rolling his eyes.

“We can take an Uber to and from the hospital. You can sleep on the way there, on the way back, and during the surgery.” He said leaning in to kiss her neck.

Jess let out a laugh that morphed into a squeal when Clyde pulled her on top of him.

“Clyde, I’m serious.” She said in a stern voice.

Clyde rolled over and checked the bold red lines on the clock which read ten forty.

“Alright, but after this surgery I wanna movie marathon.” He said with a pout.

Leaning into Clyde, Jess kissed him long and deep before pulling back.

“Promise.” She whispered before rolling over.

Clyde let out a frustrated groan.

“Fine.” He muttered, causing her to laugh.

Reaching behind her, Jess found Clyde’s hand and tugged at it, urging him to come closer. Then, when he was pressed against her back, she slipped his hand up her shirt and cupped it around her bare breast.
Pressing his face into her neck, Clyde let out a groan before gently biting her neck.

“Such a tease.” He muttered into her skin.

Jess let out a laugh but said nothing. Instead, she closed her eyes and allowed herself to drift off to sleep.
